Nicknamed "The Transylvanian Alps" Fagaras Mountains are the most interesting and massive vertebrae around the spine of the Carpathian Mountains of Romania.
Being bounded on the west by the Olt River Gorge, east of the river and the River, the Fagaras Mountains covers an area of almost 3,000 square kilometers, has a length of 70 km and a width of about 40 km. Also in this mountain range is 8 of the 15 highest peaks in Romania, which exceed altitude of 2500 m: Moldoveanu (2544 m), Negoiu (2535 m), Corner Vistei, flagstones, Horn Caltunului, hunting his Buteanu, Hârtopu and Dora.
Paths are many but the most important and best known is "Trans fagarasan" not only crosses the Fagaras Mountains practical, but also reaches an altitude of 2042 m near Lake Balea chalet and with the same name. The only drawback is that Transfagarasanul is open only a few months a year, from July to October. The most important points of interest are Vidraru Lake and Dam (one of the largest in Europe), Poenari Castle (built since the times of Vlad Tepes - sec. XV), and Glacial Lake Balea Balea Cascada.
With regard to escalate, there are many possibilities as Fagaras Mountains are deprived of high vertical walls. Opened but recently, a climbing area on the southern slope, the valley of Stan. Also, winter can ice climbing in many places: Valea lui Stan Vidraru Dam on Falls Ciocanu and town, the Cabana Capra etc..
The only areas of interest and which have been established and alpine routes are concentrated around major tourist points of the solid: Balea, Caltun, Podragu Valley Saturdays, Avrig.
Although there are many possibilities of accommodation, from camping and places to hostels and huts, it is clear that the majority have made reservations in advance because they are occupied throughout the year. (Cabana Balea Lac, Chalet Negoiu Tourist Complex Cabana Capra Cabana Balea Cascada etc..).
